The day finally arrived for my stem cell transplant: the day I believe is the end of the Leukemia in my body, and its’ existence in my family. I first had 5 days of a super strong chemotherapy cocktail followed by two days of rest. This chemotherapy was so strong that to this day (Day 51) it is still causing a number of side effects in and on my body.
The actual stem cell transplant is somewhat of a quiet event in that they give you a few medications ahead of time to minimize the more common reactions that can occur during the procedure, and then they hang the bag of cells, two in my case, that drip into your IV line via gravity. I did feel chills and a bit tired during the procedure, but otherwise felt fine. My beautiful husband sat right by my side and held my hand throughout the procedure. I just kept envisioning these happy, healthy, strong cells entering my body and restoring my health.
Before the cells were infused I had the cells blessed with the following prayer: “Most merciful God, Creator and Sustainer, You are the fountain and source of all. We come before you humbled by your great gift of life. In your infinite love, you composed us of tiny cells and gave them the power to sustain, heal, and renew. For giving scientists, physicians, and nurses the knowledge to transplant healthy cells for others’ well-being, we give you thanks. For providing Jennifer a stem cell donor, we give you thanks For the loving support of family and friends, we give you thanks. For having brought us to this special day, we give you thanks.
You are the Great Healer and Physician, and we acknowledge that all healing comes from you. Bless these stem cells; bring your healing and new life to Jennifer starting today. May Jennifer trust you not only in the power you’ve given these stem cells to heal, but also in your invitation to spiritual rebirth. Give Jennifer patience and hope as they wait for the restoration of their body, mind and spirit. Please send your Spirit upon these cells, blessing them with your love and healing power so that they bring about full and complete restoration to Jennifer’s body. In the name of the father, Som and Holy spirit we pray, AMEN.”
