Hello my friends,
Although I have yet to finish telling you about all that has occurred during my chemotherapy, and the many months since I completed treatment, I must first update you with this fact: the Acute Myeloid Leukemia has come back. Relapse. Refractory. Whatever way you say it, the fact is the same.
It all began on Columbus day when I went in for my usual blood work, left a few minutes after they took the sample, I went to lunch with a friend, and by late afternoon knew something was wrong. I always get the results, via the MyChart portal, within an hour of the blood draw, but hours had passed and no results. At 2:37 in the morning, I got the alert, read the results, and cried as the results stated 2% blasts when there should be 0%.
The nurse called the next day and instructed me to have another blood draw Wednesday and they would look at the cell counts/see if there are blasts, and they would perform flow cytometry. There were 0% blasts in my blood, but on Friday they called to tell me the flow cytometry results showed abnormalities. The weekend was rough, but luckily I had planned a Birthday party for my husband, so I kept myself as distracted as possible.
Monday came, and the doctor said it seems the Acute Myeloid Leukemia has relapsed, we would have to do another biopsy, and for me to plan to stop work again. I completed the work week, had the biopsy, and received the results: 60% blasts in my marrow. Sh*t. Damn. *&%$. I spent a few days feeling numb and distraught, but have pulled myself together, and plan to defeat this damn Leukemia.
Leukemia may think it is big, but my God is bigger and I will defeat it.
