Living a healthy lifestyle goes beyond food, even though we often feel much healthier when we try a new diet i.e., gluten-free, paleo etc. But to live a healthy lifestyle we need to consider other factors so let’s pose the question ‘What are the other ways to stay healthy and active?
To me (and doctors), exercise, sleep, and even emotional health are all apart of the health & wellness equation so let me break down how I address those items.
Exercise: My goal is to exercise 4-5 times a week. There are many days when I just dont feel like working out, so there are a few things that I do to get myself motivated including music, visual reminders, and simply knowing how great I feel when I stick to the goal.
After a workout, I fuel myself with snacks that I enjoy (all gluten-free by the way):
*apple slices & peanut butter
*almonds and dried cranberries
*smoothies
*low-fat yogurt
*half a small avocado
*turkey slices
Sleep and I have a love-hate relationship. I love to get plenty and hate when I do not enough. I have always had trouble falling asleep and then if I wake up at night, I can not get back to sleep. When I was in my 20’s and 30’s, I could easily do well on 5-6 hours of sleep. Now, I find I get to be a cranky lady when I dont get 7-8 hours.
To prepare for sleep, I try washing up early, changing into PJ’s when the kids do and sometimes taking a warm bath. It also would do us all good to also turn off all of our electronic devices before dinner.
How about some emotional health? To me that means time to yourself, with friends, a nap, whatever it is that makes you smile. Yes, do that (as long as it is legal)!
