Without realizing it, I am often creating gluten-free recipes. For instance, I posted two gluten-free (GF) recipes last week alone, in addition to sharing some of the Udi’s products we bought for our daughter since she was put on a dairy-free diet for a short time (disclosure: I just began working with Udi’s as a GF living ambassador).
With food allergies and sensitivities becoming more prevalent, we often experiment with different recipes and menu plans with restricted foods in mind. But where do you start if your child or family suddenly finds your need to follow a restricted diet? Do you know what foods are excluded from, say, gluten-free diets?
Our family first encountered gluten-free foods about six years ago when a close friend and playmate was diagnosed with celiac disease. Therefore, we started becoming mindful and educated about what foods to have when we entertained their family.
However, back six years ago, there was not nearly as much information available as there is now, but I do recall that we were always safe with serving hummus, fruits, veggies, cheese sticks, popcorn, yogurt, eggs and could find some GF rice crackers at the grocery store. His mom used to always make gluten-free pizza and cupcakes to take to birthday parties, as well as snacks, so that he always had something to eat. Luckily, many people are now educated about GF foods and it is much easier to pick up gluten-free foods at local stores.
One wonderful destination for anyone interested in or needing to become educated in living and eating gluten-free is Udi’s Gluten Free Foods. The website contains many resources, including their community section which has many forums including Family & Friend Support, Holidays & Celebrations, Newly Gluten Free, and Recipes. In addition, you can find a list of their products and where to find them, a shopping list of GF foods, a blog and coupons.
