I am finally going to start my posts on Blogher in NYC this year. I arrived a day early so that I could take part in some activities and start connecting. The first event was an intimate tour of Ellis Island sponsored by Liberty Mutual and the Responsibility Project . The main topic of the day was ‘Personal Responsibility’ and exploring what it means to each person and what it means to do the right thing.
The day began with boarding an air-conditioned bus which provided relief from the already stifling day. There was a short introduction and video about the Responsibility Project, some history of the city and Battery Park and some facts about the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Once we arrived at the park, we rode on he ferry, past the Statue of Liberty and then onto Ellis Island and onto lunch.
During lunch, we were shown this video directed by Danny Glover. Watching this video reminded me of an incident that had occurred to me after few weeks prior that involved me, an elderly woman and a torrential downpour. And left feeling a bit beaten by the experience but with pride in knowing I did what was right. Something that most people would not have done because we are all wrapped up in what is going on with ourselves, not involved in what is going on around us. I am guilty as well and am glaad I took that moment to stop and look around. At any rate, I shared the story with the representative from Liberty Mutual that day.
After lunch, we had some more history lessons and got to look on the Wall of Honor where I found names from my family as well as those of my husband’s family.
What do you think of the video? What does it say to you?

Disclosure: I was provided transportation, lunch and a bag that contained the Immigrant Cookbook, water, sunscreen and cookies.
